The terrestrial Styx was a river and cataract in Arcadia (but the Titaressus is called (Il. 2.755) a branch of the Styx). The name transferred to the chief river of the underworld Il. 8.369: Od. 10.514. The Styx invoked in oaths (with apparently confusion between the upper and under rivers) Il. 2.755, Il. 14.271, Il. 15.37: Od. 5.185.
