τρόπαιον
-ου [τροπή; bor., Eng. trophy ], trophy, a memorial of the enemy’s defeat, consisting of captured armor and weapons fastened up on a trunk of a tree or a post at the place where the enemy turned in flight (whence the name). Such trophies
(see Fig. 71, p. 214) were of course only temporary. More permanent memorials were formed by armor and weapons which were taken home and deposited as votive offerings in temples; see 152, 23.
