μέγαρον -ου, τό. 1 The chief room of a house, the general living-room, the hall : ἐνὶ μεγάροισιν ἑκάστη πῦρ καιόντων Il. 8.520 : μέθυ νεῖμον πᾶσιν ἀνὰ μ. Od. 7.180. Cf. Od. 4.37, 300, Od. 7.230, Od. 11.420, Od. 16.343, Od. 21.229, etc. In pl. in the same sense : ὁμάδησαν ἀνὰ μέγαρα Od. 1.365. Cf. In pl. of the abodes of the gods Il. 11.76, Il. 21.475 : Od. 1.27. 3 A chamber or set of chambers appropriated to the lady of a house and her maidens, the women's quarters (cf. ὑπερώϊον 2) : τὴν εὗρʼ ἐν μεγάρῳ Il. 3.125 (the same as the θάλαμος of 142), μεγάροιο διέσσυτο Il. 22.460 (the same as the μυχὸς δόμου of 440) : ἐς μ. καλέασα Od. 1.416, ἦλθον ἀμφίπολοι ἐκ μεγάροιο (i.e. from the part of it from which they had been summoned) Od. 18.198.
