ἀμφίπολος -ου, ἡ [ἀμφι- 4 + -πολος, conn. with πολεύω.] A handmaid, a female attendant or servant, hardly to be distinguished from δμῳή. (The words are sometimes used indifferently; cf. Od. 6.52 with 307, and 84 with 99. But in Od. 22.483, 484 ἀμφίπολοι seem to be personal attendants and δμῳαί the other servants.)
