αὐλός

2 hollow tube, pipe, groove, περόνη τέτυκτο αὐλοῖσιν διδύμοισι the buckle was furnished with two pipes or grooves (into which the tongue fitted), Od. 19.227; ἐγκέφαλος παρʼ αὐλὸν ἀνέδραμε spirted up beside the vizard (cf. αὐλῶπις), or beside the socket of the spear-head into which the shaft fitted, Il. 17.297; but in Od. 22.18 αὐλὸς παχύς means the jet of blood through the tube of the nostril; αὐλὸς ἐκ χαλκείου the smithʼs bellows, Hp. Art. 47, 77, cf. Th. 4.100; tube of the clepsydra, Arist. Pr. 914b14; βλέπειν διʼ αὐλοῦ Id. GA 780b19.

δαίδαλος

cunningly or curiously wrought, μάχαιρα Pi. N. 4.59 ( Did., Δαιδάλου codd.); πέπλος A. Eu. 635: in Hom. only neut. as Subst., ὃς χερσὶν ἐπίστατο δαίδαλα πάντα τεύχειν . . to frame all cunning works, Il. 5.60, al.; τεκτόνων δ. Pi. P. 5.36, cf. Opp. C. 1.355: also in sg., Od. 19.227.

αὐλός

αὐλός -οῦ, ὁ. 1 A wind-instrument resembling a flute or clarionet: αὐλῶν συρίγγων τʼ ἐνοπήν (app. (to avoid asyndeton) to be rendered flute-pipes, taking αὐλῶν συρίγγων as virtually a compound word) Il. 10.13, αὐλοὶ φόρμιγγές τε Il. 18.495. 2 Applied (app. from resemblance to a tube) to a jet or column of blood Od. 22.18. 3 A hollow or socket in a spear-head to receive the end of the shaft Il. 17.297. 4 A tube or sheath to receive a pin of a περόνη Od. 19.227 ( = the κληῗδες of Od. 18.294: see κληΐς 5).

δαίδαλον

δαίδαλον -ου, τό. Something curiously wrought, an ornament Od. 19.227. In pl., things curiously wrought, pieces of cunning workmanship, ornaments: χάλκευον δαίδαλα πολλά Il. 18.400. Cf. Il. 5.60, Il. 14.179, Il. 18.482, Il. 19.13, 19.

κληΐς

κληΐς -ιδος, ἡ [κληΐω.] Dat. pl. κληΐδεσσι (ῑ) Od. 12.215. κληῗσι Il. 16.170, Il. 24.318 : Od. 2.419, Od. 9.103, Od. 15.221, etc. 1 A bar or bolt securing a gate or door within : θύρας σταθμοῖσιν ἐπῆρσε κληϊδι κρυπτῇ Il. 14.168. Cf. Il. 24.318, 455 (here app. identical with the ἐπιβλής of 453) : ἐπὶ κληῗδʼ ἐτάνυσσεν ἱμάντι Od. 1.442, σταθμοῖο παρὰ κληῗδα λιάσθη (i.e. through the slit for the ἱμάς) Od. 4.838. Cf. Od. 4.802, Od. 21.241. App., a pin securing the ὀχῆες of a gate at their point of intersection Il. 12.456 (see ἐπημοιβός 2). 2 An instrument for pushing back from without the bar or bolt of a door : οἴξασα κληῗδι θύρας Il. 6.89 : ἐν κληῗδʼ ἧκεν (i.e. into an aperture made for the purpose) Od. 21.47. Cf. Od. 21.6, 50. 3 In pl., rowlocks or thole-pins (to which the oars were secured by the τροποί); also explained as oarsmen's benches (as passing from side to side of, and stiffening, the framework of a ship = ζυγά. See ζυγόν 2); but Od. 8.37 cited below seems to be decisive against this : πεντήκοντʼ ἔσαν ἄνδρες ἐπὶ κληῗσιν ἐρταῖροι Il. 16.170 : δησάμενοι δʼ εὖ πάντες ἐπὶ κληῗσιν ἐρετμὰ ἔκβητε Od. 8.37. Cf. Od. 2.419 = Od. 4.579, Od. 9.103 = 179 = 471 = 563 = Od. 11.638 = Od. 12.146 = Od. 15.549, Od. 12.215, Od. 13.76, Od. 15.221. 4 The collar-bone (as joining the breast and neck) : τὸν ἕτερον κληῗδα παρʼ ὦμον πλῆξεν Il. 5.146. Cf. Il. 5.579, Od. 8.325, Il. 17.309, Il. 21.117, Il. 22.324 (in pl.). 5 A tube or sheath to receive a pin of a περόνη : περόναι κληῗσιν ἀραρυῖαι Od. 18.294 (= the αὐλοῖσιν of Od. 19.227 : see αὐλός 4).
