οὐδός

οὐδός -οῦ, ὁ. 1 A threshold, a block or row of blocks standing more or less above the surrounding level and forming the lower part of a doorway or gateway, in the case of the μέγαρον raised considerably and of considerable width, and so affording room for sitting or standing (see αὔλειος, λάϊνος, μέλινος 2, χάλκεος) : ἔστη ἐτʼ οὐδὸν ἰών Il. 6.375. Cf. Il. 9.404, 582 : τὸν κατʼ οὐδοῦ βάντα προσηύδα Πηνελόπεια Od. 4.680 (no doubt the threshold of the μέγαρον. App. he has followed the suitors into the μ., and as he is coming out again P. sees him from her quarters, addresses him, and comes down (cf. 760) to speak to him), ἐπʼ οὐδοῦ ἶζε θαλάμοιο 718 (app., a block of wood or stone at the foot of the stairs leading to the θ. (P. is below; cf. 760)), ἐς μυχὸν ἐξ οὐδοῦ Od. 7.87, ὑπʼ αὐλῆς οὐδόν 130 (= οὐδὸν αὔλειον). Cf. Od. 7.135, Od. 10.62; Od. 17.575 (sc. θαλάμοιο; see 506), Od. 18.17, Od. 21.43, Od. 22.2, etc. A verge or edge ascribed to the gulf of Tartarus Il. 8.15. 2 Fig. : γήραος οὐ., app. not so much the threshold as the stage of old age, old age itself (the threshold being thought of as within the room as in Od. 17.339) Il. 22.60, Il. 24.487 : Od. 15.246, 348, Od. 23.212.

ὑπέρ [in form comp. fr. ὑπό.] Also (in phrase ὑπεὶρ ἅλα) ὑπείρ Il. 23.227, Il. 24.13 : Od. 3.73, Od. 4.172, Od. 9.254. (ὑπέρ commonly with anastrophe when immediately following the case-form.) Prep. with 1 Acc. a In reference to motion or extent over a space : τὸ δὲ τεῖχος ὕπερ πᾶν δοῦπος ὀρώρει Il. 12.289. Cf. Il. 23.227, Il. 24.13 : ἦ μαψιδίως ἀλάλησθε ὑπεὶρ ἅλα; Od. 3.73 = Od. 9.254. Cf. Od. 4.172, Od. 9.260. b In reference to passing over an object : ὑπὲρ ὦμον ἤλυθʼ ἀκωκή Il. 5.16, δόρυ χροὸς ἀντετόρησε πρυμνὸν ὕπερ θέναρος 339 (app. the κόλπος of the robe is held up in defence by the hand with the palm outwards). In reference to a person, in spite of, with . . . against one : ὑπὲρ θεόν Il. 17.327. 2 Genit. a In reference to position or height over or above something : ὑπὲρ κεφαλῆς Il. 2.20, ὅσον τʼ ὄργυιʼ ὑπὲρ αἴης Il. 23.327. Cf. Il. 13.200, etc. : Od. 4.803, Od. 6.107, Od. 12.406, Od. 16.471, etc. So in reference to the position of wound : βάλε στέρνον ὑπὲρ μαζοῖο Il. 4.528. Cf.
