οὐδός -οῦ, ὁ. 1 A threshold, a block or row of blocks standing more or less above the surrounding level and forming the lower part of a doorway or gateway, in the case of the μέγαρον raised considerably and of considerable width, and so affording room for sitting or standing (see αὔλειος, λάϊνος, μέλινος 2, χάλκεος) : ἔστη ἐτʼ οὐδὸν ἰών Il. 6.375. Cf. Il. 9.404, 582 : τὸν κατʼ οὐδοῦ βάντα προσηύδα Πηνελόπεια Od. 4.680 (no doubt the threshold of the μέγαρον. App. he has followed the suitors into the μ., and as he is coming out again P. sees him from her quarters, addresses him, and comes down (cf. 760) to speak to him), ἐπʼ οὐδοῦ ἶζε θαλάμοιο 718 (app., a block of wood or stone at the foot of the stairs leading to the θ.
