Πηνελόπεια

Πηνελόπεια (ἐχέφρων, περίφρων , πολύδωρος). Daughter of Icarius-2, sister of Iphthime, wife of Odysseus and mother of Telemachus. Bids Phemius change his song Od. 1.328; her stratagem in the matter of the web Od. 2.94, Od. 19.138, Od. 24.129; hears of her son's departure and of the plot against him Od. 4.675; appears to the suitors and rebukes Antinous Od. 16.409, is put off with fair words by Eurymachus 434; welcomes her son home Od. 17.36, he tells her his story 108; she hears the disguised Odysseus being struck Od. 17.492; summons Odysseus Od. 17.508, who declines to come at that time 560; she appears again in the μέγαρον beautified (Od. 18.187) by Athene Od. 18.158, rebukes her son 215, relates to Eurymachus Odysseus's parting charge 250, suggests gifts 274, which are sent for 290; when the suitors have gone appears again Od. 19.53, rebukes Melantho 89 , converses with Ο. 103, bids Eurycleia wash him 357, he interprets Penelope's dream 535; she sets down the bow, etc., for the contest Od. 21.1; is summoned by Eurycleia after the destruction of the suitors Od. 23.1, cannot clearly recognize Ο. 85, to convince her he speaks of his bed 171, she recognizes him fully 205, the pair retire 289, he relates his adventures to her 310, his charge to her before leaving the city 350; etc.

θάλαμος

θάλαμος -ου, ὁ. A room or chamber. 1 a A sleeping-chamber, a bed-room: πρόσθεν θαλάμοιο θυράων Il. 9.473 (app. a room built in the αὐλή and opening into the αἴθουσα near the πρόδομος; or perh. a portion of the αἴθουσα next the πρόδομος walled off). Cf. Il. 9.475: ὅθι οἱ θ. αὐλῆς δέδμητο Od. 1.425 (αὐλῆς app. local genit., in the . . . ; cf. Il. 9.473 above), ἐς θάλαμον ᾧ ἔνι κούρη κοιμᾶτο Od. 6.15. Cf. Od. 1.436, 441, Od. 2.5 = Od. 4.310, Od. 3.413, Od. 7.7, Od. 10.340, Od. 19.48. b A bridal chamber: γήμας ἐκ θαλάμοιο μετὰ κλέος ἵκετʼ Ἀχαιῶν (leaving his just wedded wife) Il. 11.227. c The sleeping-chamber occupied by a married pair: θάλαμον λιποῦσα (i.e. the bed of Menclaus) Il. 3.174. Of such a room in the palace of Zeus Il. 14.166, 188, 338. In the palace of Hephaestus Od. 8.277. 2 A chamber appropriated to the lady of a house and her maidens: ὡρμᾶτʼ ἐκ θαλάμοιο Il. 3.142 (the same as the μέγαρον of 125). Cf. Il. 6.316, 321, 336: ἐξ Ἑλένη θαλάμοιο ἤλυθεν Od. 4.121. Cf. Od. 4.718, 802, Od. 17.36 = Od. 19.53, Od. 17.506. In pl. of the women's apartments generally: νύμφας ἐκ θαλάμων ἠγίνεον Il. 18.492 (cf. Od. 22.143 cited under (4); or this may be the pl. of indefiniteness like νύμφας in this line and γάμοι and εἰλαπίναι in the prec. line) (u.l. ἐς θαλάμους, which would go under 1.b): μυχῷ θαλάμων ἥμεθα Od. 23.41. 3 A work-room Il. 4.143. 4 A room for storage or safe custody, a store-room, a treasure-chamber: θύρη θαλάμοιο ἀνέρος ἀφνειοῖο Il. 24.317: χηλὸν ἐξέφερεν θαλάμοιο Od. 8.439, ἀνέβαινε ἐς θαλάμους Od. 22.143 (app. meaning a single room; cf. Il. 18.492 cited under (3)). Cf.
