εἴρω

say, speak, tell:— Act. is used by Hom. only in Od., and in 1 pers., μνηστῆρσιν δʼ . . τάδε εἴρω 2.162, cf. 13.7; τὰ δέ τοι νημερτέα εἴρω 11.137:— Med. in same sense, καὶ εἴρετο δεύτερον αὖτις Il. 1.513; εἴροντο δὲ κήδεʼ ἑκάστη Od. 11.542, cf. Nic. Th. 359:— Pass., 3 sg. εἴρεται is said, Arat. 172, 261: for other forms v. ἐρῶ. ( ϝέρ-y ω, fr. root of ἐρῶ, q.v.)

κῆδος τό [cf. κήδω.] 1 Trouble, pain : ἦ πού τί σε κ. ἱκάνει; Il. 15.245. Cf. Il. 16.516. Matter for trouble or care : τῶν ἄλλων οὐ κ. (we need not mind about them) Od. 22.254. Trouble or grief occasioned by a family loss : χρή σε γαμβρῷ ἀμυνέμεναι εἴ πέρ τί σε κ. ἱκάνει Il. 13.464. 2 In pl., troubles, woes, sorrows, sufferings, cares : Ἀργείοισι κήδεʼ ἐφῆκεν Il. 1.445. Cf. Il. 2.15, Il. 4.270, Il. 9.592, Il. 10.106, Il. 19.302, Il. 24.617, etc. : κήδεα πόλλʼ Ὀδυσῆος Od. 5.5, εἴροντο κήδεʼ ἑκάστη (app., those who were dear to them in the world above) Od. 11.542, ὁππόσα κήδεʼ ἀνέτλης Od. 14.47.
