ἶσος

ἶσος -η, -ον (ϝῖσος) Also (always in fem. and only in senses 1.a and 5) with prothetic ἔῑσος -η, -ον (ἔϝισος). 1 a Equal in height: [ἵππους] ἐΐσας Il. 2.765. b Even, in line: ἴσας ὑσμίνη κεφαλὰς ἔχεν Il. 11.72. c The same in amount or value, equal: ἴσην βίην καὶ κῦδος Il. 7.205. L. cavus and κῆτος). 1 Having a cavity inside, hollow: δόμον (a nest of wasps or bees) Il. 12.169: λόχον (i.e. the Trojan horse) Od. 4.277, Od. 8.515, δόρυ (the same) Od. 8.507, φαρέτρης Od. 21.417. Of caves Od. 12.84, 93, 317. 2 Showing a cavity or cleft, fissured: πέτρην Il. 21.494. Formed with a cavity into which something is to fit: μεσόδμης Od. 2.424=Od. 15.289. 3 Fashioned in concave form, hollow. Epithet of ships Il. 1.26, Il. 5.791, Il. 7.78, Il. 8.98, Il. 10.525, etc.: Od. 1.211, Od. 2.18, Od. 3.344, Od. 4.817, Od. 10.447, Od. 15.420, etc. Joined with ἐΐση Od. 11.508.
