ἔμπεδος

2 steadfast, μένος, ἴς, Il. 5.254, Od. 11.393; φρένες, ἦτορ, νόος, Il. 6.352, 10.94, 11.813; χρὼς ἔ. 19.33; of a person, ἔ. οὐδʼ ἀεσίφρων (of Priam) 20.183; λίσσεται ἔμπεδον εἶναι [τὴν πομπήν] prays that it may be sure and certain, Od. 8.30, cf. Pi. N. 7.57; δίκη δέ τοι ἔ. ἔστω καὶ θέμις A.R. 4.372, etc.; once in A., ἔ. σίνος a cleaving or clinging mischief, Ag. 561; ἔ. φρονήματα S. ἴς

strength, force, of persons, ἀλλʼ ἄρα καὶ ἲς ἐσθλή Il. 12.320; ἐπέρεισε δὲ ἶνʼ ἀπέλεθρον 7.269; ἤ μοι ἔτʼ ἐστὶν ἴς, οἵη πάρος . . Od. 21.283, cf. 11.393, 18.3: freq. in periphr., ἱερὴ ἲς Τηλεμάχοιο the strong Telemachus, 2.409; κρατερὴ ἲς Ὀδυσῆος Il. 23.720; ἲς Ἡρακλῆος Hes. Th. 951; and in twofold periphr., ἲς βίης Ἡρακληείης ib. 332; also of things, ἲς ἀνέμου or ἀνέμοιο, Il. 15.383, 17.739, Od. 9.71; ἲς ποταμοῖο Il. 21.356; κράταιʼ ἴς was read by Ptol.Asc. in Od. 11.597; v. κρατύς. κῖκυς

strength, vigour, poet. word, οὐ γάρ οἱ ἔτʼ ἦν ἲς ἔμπεδος οὐδέ τι κ. Od. 11.393, cf. h.Ven. 237, Alc. 137 (dub.); σοὶ δʼ οὐκ ἔνεστι κ. οὐδʼ αἱμόρρυτοι φλέβες A. Fr. 230.

ἀλλά

ἀλλά [ἄλλος.] 1 Adversative particle, but Il. 1.24, 25, 94, 116, 125, etc.: Od. 1.6, 16, 22, 42, 48, etc. Elliptically: ἀλλʼ οὐ γάρ δʼ ἐθέλω . . . (but I say no more, for . . .) Il. 7.242: ἀλλʼ οὐ γάρ τις πρῆξις ἐγίγνετο (but they soon gave over, for . . . ) Od. 10.202 = 568, ἀλλʼ οὐ γάρ οἱ ἔτʼ ἦν ἴς ἔμπεδος (but it was of no avail, for . . . ) Od. 11.393. Cf. Od. 19.591. 2 Introducing an apodosis, yet, nevertheless: εἴ περ γὰρ . . . ἀλλʼ οὐ πείσονται Il. 8.154. Cf. ἔμπεδος -ον [ἐμ-, ἐν- 3 + πεδ-, ποδ-, πούς. Firm on the feet. Cf. ἠπεδανός.] 1 Standing firmly in place, not overthrown, intact: τεῖχος Il. 12.9, 12. 2 Maintained in place, steady: ἔμπεδον ἔχων σάκος Il. 16.107. Cf. Il. 16.520. In place, not displaced Il. 10.94: Od. 23.203. 3 Safe, intact Od. 2.227, Od. 11.178, Od. 19.525. Not decayed, fresh: χρώς Il. 19.33, 39. Unimpaired, retaining vigour: βίη Il. 4.314, Il. 7.157 = Il. 11.670, Il. 23.629. Cf. Il. 5.254, Il. 11.813, Il. 13.512, Il. 23.627: Od. 10.240, 493, Od. 11.393, Od. 14.468, 503, Od. 19.493, Od. 21.426, Od. 22.226. Unimpaired in mind Il. 20.183. ἴς

ἴς ἰνός, ἡ (ϝίς) [ἴς, ἶφι, ἴφιος, show resemblances, but it is difficult to say whether, or to what extent, they are connected with each other.] Dat. pl. ἴνεσι Il. 23.191. 1 A tendon or sinew: χρόα ἴνεσιν (the flesh on the . . .) Il. 23.191. Cf. Od. 11.219. 2 Specifically, the double tendon at the back of an ox's neck Il. 17.522 (cf. ἰνίον). 3 Bodily strength or vigour: ἶνʼ ἀπέλεθρον ἔχοντας Il. 5.245, οὐ γὰρ ἐμὴ ἴς ἐσθʼ οἵη πάρος ἔσκεν Il. 11.668. Cf. Il. 12.320, Il. 23.720: οὐδʼ ἲς οὐδὲ βίη (the two hardly to be distinguished) Od. 18.3. Cf. Od. 11.393, Od. 12.175, Od. 21.283.
