ῥῆγος

rug, blanket, in Hom. mostly in pl. (sg. in Il. 9.661, Od. 13.73, 118); ῥ. καλά, πορφύρεα, Il. 24.644, Od. 4.297; σιγαλόεντα 6.38, 11.189, etc.: used as covering of a bed, Il. 9.661, 24.644, Od. 3.349, etc.; or of a seat, 10.352; prob. a garment, 6.38: since, in 13.73, 118, Hom. distinguishes ῥῆγος and λίνον, it is prob. that the ῥῆγος was of wool. (from ῥῆξαι, = βάψαι, acc. to Eust. 782.20, but elsewhere this verb is written ῥέξαι, v. ῥέζω (B).)

χλαῖνα

upper-garment, cloak, wrapper, worn loose over the χιτών, Hom. (v. infr.), Alc. Supp. 9.3, Sapph. Supp. 22.9, etc.: in Hom. worn only by men, ἀνεμοσκεπής, ἀλεξάνεμος, Il. 16.224, Od. 14.529; πυκνὴ καὶ μεγάλη ib. 520; οὔλη 4.50, al.; ἀμφὶ δʼ ἄρα χλαῖναν περονήσατο φοινικόεσσαν διπλῆν ἐκταδίην Il. 10.133; ἀπʼ ὤμοιϊν χ. θέτο Od. 21.118; βῆ δὲ θέειν, ἀπὸ δὲ χ. βάλε Il. 2.183, cf. Od. 14.500; given as a prize, Hdt. 2.91; as ransom, Il. 24.230; αἱ Πελληνικαὶ χ. ἃς καὶ ἆθλα ἐτίθεσαν ἐν τοῖς ἀγῶσι Str. 8.7.5; also used as a blanket or covering in sleep, Od. 4.299, 20.4; δέμνια καὶ χλαῖναι καὶ ῥήγεα 11.189; χλαῖναι καὶ ῥήγεα . . ἐνεύδειν 3.349; of husband and wife, μίμνομεν μιᾶς ὑπὸ χλαίνης S. Ag. 872: porv., ᾗ μήτε χ. μήτε σισύρα συμφέρει content neither with cloak nor rug, i.e. never satisfied, Ar. Ra. 1459 (the σισύρα being coarser, cf. χλαῖναν μαλακήν, σισύραν Id. V. 738 (anap.)); but also χ. δέ σοι λαβὼν παχεῖαν ἐπιβαλῶ Λακωνικήν Theopomp.Com. 10; χ. πωλεῖν, when spring comes, Ar. Av. 715 (anap.), cf. χλαῖνα· χλανίς, ἢ ἱμάτιον χειμερινόν, Hsch.: prov., ἐν τῷ θέρει τὴν χ. κατατρίβων, of reckless improvidence, Metrod. Fr. 55: τράγου χ. μελέα, of a goatskin cloak, E. Cyc. 80 (lyr.).

δέμνια

δέμνια τά [δέμω.] A bedstead, a bed. (In Il. 24.644 two beds are referred to. See 648. So perh. also in Od. 4.297, 301; but from Od. 15.45 it would rather appear that Telemachus and Peisistratus were then sleeping together): δέμνιʼ ὑπʼ αἰθούσῃ θέμεναι Il. 24.644: = Od. 4.297 = Od. 7.336, δέμνια κούρης Od. 6.20. Cf. Od. 4.301, Od. 8.277, 282, 296, 314, Od. 11.189, Od. 19.318, 599, Od. 20.139.

ῥῆγος

ῥῆγος τό. 1 App., a cloth, prob. of wool, laid on the rough bedding for the comfort of the sleeper (cf. λίνον 3) : κώεά τε ῥῆγός τε λίνοιό τε λεπτὸν ἄωτον Il. 9.661. Cf. Il. 24.644 :=Od. 4.297=Od. 7.336, Od. 3.349, 351, Od. 6.38, Od. 11.189, Od. 13.73 (here app. simply laid on the deck of the ship), 118, Od. 19.318, 337, Od. 20.141, Od. 23.180. 2 App., a similar cloth thrown over the back of a chair : ἔβαλλε θρόνοις ἔνι ῥήγεα καθύπερθʼ, ὑπένερθε δὲ λῖθʼ ὑπέβαλλεν Od. 10.352.

σιγαλόεις

σιγαλόεις -εντος. Bright, shining, glittering, glistening, glossy. Epithet of various things : ἡνία Il. 5.226, 328, Il. 8.116, 137, Il. 11.128, Il. 17.479, εἵματα Il. 22.154, δέσματα 468 : θρόνῳ Od. 5.86, εἵματα Od. 6.26, ῥήγεα 38, Od. 11.189, Od. 19.318, 337, Od. 23.180, ἡνία Od. 6.81, ῥήγεϊ Od. 13.118, χιτῶνα Od. 15.60, Od. 19.232, ὑπερώϊα Od. 16.449, Od. 18.206, Od. 19.600, Od. 22.428.

χλαῖνα

χλαῖνα -ης, ἡ. 1 An outer garment of wool, app. of the nature of a mantle or cloak, worn by men over the χιτών (app. distinguished from the φᾶρος only by being of a simpler character): ἀπὸ χλαῖναν βάλεν Il. 2.183, χλαῖνάν τʼ ἠδὲ χιτῶνα 262. Cf. Il. 10.133, Il. 16.224, Il. 22.493, Il. 24.163, 230: Od. 4.50, 115, Od. 5.229, Od. 14.460, Od. 17.86, Od. 19.225, Od. 21.118, etc. 2 A cloth or blanket of similar material covering a sleeper: χλαίνας ἐνθέμεναι οὔλας καθύπερθεν ἕσασθαι Il. 24.646: =Od. 4.299=Od. 7.338.
