Their name is said to have been derived from the old Latin word <q rend="double" xml:lang="lat">lixa,</q> <q rend="double">water,</q> probably because they originally supplied the army with water. <q rend="double" xml:lang="lat">Lixabundus</q> here means <q rend="double">laden with baggage,</q> in allusion to the fishing-tackle which the lad is carrying.</note>?
