						<lb/>τῶν σπερμάτων γένεσις συμβαίνει πᾶσιν ἐκ τοῦ μέσου· <lb/>διθύρων γὰρ ὄντων πάντων,
						ᾗ συμπέφυκεν ἔχεται, καὶ τὸ <lb/>μέσον ἐστὶν ἑκατέρου τῶν μορίων· ἐντεῦθεν γὰρ ὅ τε
						καυλὸς <lb/>ἐκφύεται καὶ ἡ ῥίζα τῶν φυομένων, ἡ δ’ ἀρχὴ τὸ μέσον <pb n="325"/> αὐτῶν
						ἐστίν. Ἔν τε ταῖς ἐμφυτείαις καὶ ταῖς ἀποφυτείαις <lb/>μάλιστα τοῦτο συμβαίνει περὶ τοὺς
						ὄζους· ἔστι <lb/>γὰρ ἀρχή τις ὁ ὄζος τοῦ κλάδου, ἅμα δὲ καὶ μέσον, ὥστε ἢ <lb/>τοῦτο
						ἀφαιροῦσιν ἢ εἰς τοῦτο ἐμβάλλουσιν, ἵνα ἢ ὁ κλάδος <lb/>ἢ αἱ ῥίζαι ἐκ τούτων γίνωνται,
						ὡς οὔσης τῆς ἀρχῆς ἐκ <lb/>τοῦ μέσου καυλοῦ καὶ ῥίζης. Καὶ τῶν ζῴων τῶν ἐναίμων ἡ
						<lb/>καρδία γίνεται πρῶτον. Τοῦτο δὲ δῆλον ἐξ ὧν ἐν τοῖς ἐνδεχομένοις <lb/>ἔτι
						γιγνομένοις ἰδεῖν τεθεωρήκαμεν. Ὥστε καὶ <lb/>ἐν τοῖς ἀναίμοις ἀναγκαῖον τὸ ἀνάλογον τῇ
						καρδίᾳ γίνεσθαι <lb/>πρῶτον. Ἡ δὲ καρδία ὅτι ἐστὶν ἀρχὴ τῶν φλεβῶν, <lb/>ἐν τοῖς περὶ τὰ
						μέρη τῶν ζῴων εἴρηται πρότερον· καὶ ὅτι τὸ <lb/>αἷμα τοῖς ἐναίμοις ἐστὶ τελευταία τροφή,
						ἐξ οὗ γίνεται τὰ <lb/>μόρια. Φανερὸν τοίνυν ὅτι μίαν μέν τινα ἐργασίαν ἡ τοῦ
						<lb/>στόματος λειτουργεῖ δύναμις, ἑτέραν δ’ ἡ τῆς κοιλίας περὶ <lb/>τὴν τροφήν. Ἡ δὲ
						καρδία κυριωτάτη, καὶ τὸ τέλος ἐπιτίθησιν. <lb/>Ὥστ’ ἀνάγκη καὶ τῆς αἰσθητικῆς καὶ τῆς
						θρεπτικῆς <lb/>ψυχῆς ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ τὴν ἀρχὴν εἶναι τοῖς ἐναίμοις· τὰ γὰρ <lb/>τῶν ἄλλων
						μορίων ἔργα περὶ τὴν τροφὴν τοῦ ταύτης ἔργου <lb/>χάριν ἐστί· δεῖ γὰρ τὸ κύριον πρὸς τὸ
						οὗ ἕνεκα διατελεῖν, <lb/>ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐν τοῖς τούτου ἕνεκα, οἷον ἰατρὸς πρὸς τὴν ὑγίειαν.
						<lb/>Ἀλλὰ μὴν τό γε κύριον τῶν αἰσθήσεων ἐν ταύτῃ <lb/>τοῖς ἐναίμοις πᾶσιν· ἐν τούτῳ γὰρ
						ἀναγκαῖον εἶναι τὸ <lb/>πάντων τῶν αἰσθητηρίων κοινὸν αἰσθητήριον. Δύο δὲ φανερῶς
						<lb/>ἐνταῦθα συντεινούσας ὁρῶμεν, τήν τε γεῦσιν καὶ τὴν <lb/>ἁφήν, ὥστε καὶ τὰς ἄλλας
						ἀναγκαῖον· ἐν τούτῳ μὲν γὰρ <pb n="326"/> τοῖς ἄλλοις αἰσθητηρίοις ἐνδέχεται ποιεῖσθαι
						τὴν κίνησιν, <lb/>ταῦτα δ’ οὐδὲν συντείνει πρὸς τὸν ἄνω τόπον. Χωρὶς δὲ <lb/>τούτων, εἰ
						τὸ ζῆν ἐν τούτῳ τῷ μορίῳ πᾶσίν ἐστι, δῆλον ὅτι <lb/>καὶ τὴν αἰσθητικὴν ἀρχὴν ἀναγκαῖον·
						ᾗ μὲν γὰρ ζῷον, ταύτῃ <lb/>καὶ ζῆν φαμέν, ᾗ δ’ αἰσθητικόν, ταύτῃ τὸ σῶμα ζῷον εἶναι
						<lb/>λέγομεν. Διὰ τί δ’ αἱ μὲν τῶν αἰσθήσεων φανερῶς συντείνουσι <lb/>πρὸς τὴν καρδίαν,
						αἱ δ’ εἰσὶν ἐν τῇ κεφαλῇ (διὸ καὶ <lb/>δοκεῖ τισὶν αἰσθάνεσθαι τὰ ζῷα διὰ τὸν
						ἐγκέφαλον), τὸ <lb/>αἴτιον τούτων ἐν ἑτέροις εἴρηται χωρίς. Κατὰ μὲν οὖν τὰ
						<lb/>φαινόμενα δῆλον ἐκ τῶν εἰρημένων ὅτι ἐν τούτῳ τε καὶ ἐν <lb/>τῷ μέσῳ τοῦ σώματος
						τῶν τριῶν μορίων ἥ τε τῆς αἰσθητικῆς <lb/>ἀρχὴ ψυχῆς ἐστὶ καὶ ἡ τῆς αὐξητικῆς καὶ τῆς
