                     <foreign xml:lang="grc">νῆστις,</foreign>
                     <hi rend="italics">i.e.</hi>
                     <hi rend="italics">fasting</hi> (just as we find <foreign xml:lang="grc">στάχυς</foreign> and <foreign xml:lang="grc">ἄσταχυς</foreign>) by Cratinus,
                  when he says— <quote rend="blockquote"><l>For you are not the first who's come to supper</l><l>After a lengthened fast,</l></quote> And the word <foreign xml:lang="grc">ὀξύπεινος</foreign> is used by
                  Diphilus for <hi rend="italics">hungry</hi>— <pb n="v.1.p.77"/>
                     <quote rend="blockquote"><l>I'm glad when those who set them up as wise,</l><l>Are naked seen and hungry.</l></quote> And Antiphanes says— <quote rend="blockquote"><l><hi rend="italics">A.</hi> At all events he's one complaint,</l><l>For he is hungry ever.</l><l><hi rend="italics">B.</hi> The keen Thessalian race you paint,</l><l>Who can be sated never.</l></quote> And Eubulus says— <quote rend="blockquote"><l>Then Zethus was advised to seek the plain,</l><l>The holy plain of Thebes; for there men sell</l><l>The cheapest loaves and cakes.</l><l>Again advice came to the great Amphion,</l><l>The sweet musician, pointing out to him</l><l>The famous Athens for his resting-place,</l><l>Whose sons at hunger ne'er repine, but feed</l><l>On air and sweetest hopes.</l></quote>
