                     <quote rend="blockquote"><l>Laughter and wisdom and prudence and learning.</l></quote> And Ion of Chios calls wine <quote rend="blockquote"><l>Youth of indomitable might,</l><l>With head of bull; the loveliest wight</l><l>Who ever rank'd as Love's esquire,</l><l>Filling men with strength and fire.</l></quote> And Mensitheus says— <quote rend="blockquote"><l>Great was the blessing, when the gods did show</l><l>Sweet wine to those who how to use it know;</l><l>But where bad men its righteous use pervert,</l><l>To such, I trow, it will be rather hurt.</l><l>For to the first it nourishment supplies,</l><l>Strengthens their bodies, and their minds makes wise;</l><l>A wholesome physic 'tis when mix'd with potions,</l><l>Heals wounds as well as plasters or cold lotions.</l><pb n="v.1.p.59"/><l>Wine to our daily feasts brings cheerful laughter,</l><l>When mix'd with proper quantities of water;</l><l>Men saucy get if one-third wine they quaff;</l><l>While downright madness flows from half-and-half;</l><l>And neat wine mind and body too destroys;</l><l>While moderation wise secures our joys.</l><l>And well the oracle takes this position,</l><l>That Bacchus is all people's best physician.</l></quote>
